Walking & hiking

From boosting fitness to improving mental wellbeing, and even helping us in our social lives, walking and hiking offer all kinds of tangible benefits. There is no better location to enjoy this popular pastime than Ireland. We offer several experiences for unforgettable outdoor quality time and our team is happy to help point you in the right direction when taking a walk around Ashford Castle.

Please note that walking and hiking within the Ashford Castle estate grounds are exclusively reserved for residents of Ashford Castle and The Lodge at Ashford Castle.

Walking the Ashford Estate

The Ashford estate offers a tranquil setting for leisurely walks and gentle exploration, from the winding paths of Kinlough Woods, overlooking the serene waters of Lough Corrib, to the formal gardens, where manicured lawns, seasonal planting, and historic garden design reflect the estate’s long horticultural heritage. Guests can visit the Concierge desk during their stay for a map of our recommended walking and running routes.

Beyond the estate, walkers may continue into Cong village to explore landmarks such as the 12th‑century Cong Abbey, the Monks Fishing House, and familiar filming locations from The Quiet Man, or follow the peaceful routes through Cong Woods, including the Pigeon Hole Loop.

Hiking in Galway and Mayo

For guests wishing to venture beyond the estate, the west of Ireland offers some of the country’s most rewarding hiking experiences.

Diamond Hill in Connemara National Park is a popular scenic walk, offering two way‑marked trails to suit different abilities. On clear days, the upper route rewards walkers with spectacular views across the Atlantic Ocean and towards Inishbofin and the surrounding islands.

Croagh Patrick, one of Ireland’s most iconic climbs, provides a more challenging experience, combining striking natural scenery with deep cultural significance. Wild Nephin National Park, home to Ireland’s first Dark Sky Park, offers nine walking trails through remote mountain and woodland landscapes, as well as some of the darkest and most pristine night skies in the world.

For guests wishing to venture further afield in comfort, private chauffeur transfers can be arranged through our Concierge, allowing you to enjoy these memorable landscapes with ease.

Complimentary Guided Walks

Discover the estate from a different perspective. Our guided walks, exclusively available to residents of Ashford Castle, offer an opportunity to learn, explore and immerse yourself in the surroundings. From the history of the estate to the Kitchen Gardens, or a relaxed walk with our canine companions, each walk reveals something new.

Running Buddy

We understand the importance of staying active and enjoying sports during your stay. For guests who prefer company while they exercise, a member of our team will be delighted to accompany you on a run around the estate or through the local area, guiding you along scenic routes that showcase the beauty of Ashford Castle and its surroundings.
