The bookshelves of Ashford Castle's Library

The Literary Legends of the Ashford Estate

Ashford Castle and its magnificent estate have long attracted some of Ireland's most celebrated writers, poets and storytellers, offering today's guests a unique connection to the country's enduring literary heritage.

Inspired by the Tollman family's desire to celebrate and honour Ireland's rich literary heritage, the Library at Ashford Castle was established in 2014. To bring this vision to life, local bookseller and historian Robert Scott was appointed to curate a distinguished collection reflecting Ireland's exceptional literary traditions and the Castle's unique place within them.. Although now retired, Robert continues to oversee the collection and personally guides guests through its treasures, sharing the fascinating stories, personalities and historical connections contained within its shelves.

During this exclusive Literary Experience, guests will uncover Ashford's remarkable links to Ireland's literary and cultural history. From the Wilde family, owners of the neighbouring Moytura Estate, to Lord and Lady Ardilaun's patronage of the arts, which helped nurture the spirit of the Celtic Twilight movement, the tour reveals the influential figures whose lives and works were shaped by this extraordinary landscape.

The experience culminates with a journey into the mythology, folklore and legends of the region. Guests will hear the epic tale of the Battle of Moytura between the Fir Bolg and the Tuatha Dé Danann and discover the enduring stories surrounding the origins of Lough Corrib. Passed down through generations, these ancient legends continue to inspire writers, artists and storytellers, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural fabric of the West of Ireland.

The Ashford Castle Literary Experience invites guests to step beyond the pages of history and immerse themselves in the stories, legends and literary traditions that have shaped this remarkable estate for generations.
